Web Designer scope of work template

Web design is where "just one more page" lives. The homepage gets approved, then the client remembers they need a careers page, a blog, and a pricing table that "works like Stripe's". Write the pages down before you open Figma.

Scope of work

[Project name]: 5 page marketing website

Web Designer: [Your name]Client: [Client name]Date: [Date]

Deliverables

  • Design for 5 pages: Home, About, Services, Contact, one Case Study template
  • Desktop and mobile layouts for each page
  • Build on [Webflow / WordPress / Framer] using the approved designs
  • Basic on-page SEO: titles, meta descriptions, alt text
  • Contact form connected to one email address
  • One 30 minute handover call and a short Loom walkthrough

Revisions

2 rounds of revisions on the design, 1 round on the build. A round is one consolidated list of feedback sent in one message.

Not included (out of scope)

  • Extra pages or new page templates
  • Copywriting (client provides final copy before design starts)
  • Stock photos, fonts or plugins that cost money
  • Blog setup, CMS collections, e-commerce or memberships
  • Logo or brand identity work
  • Ongoing maintenance after launch

Anything not listed under Deliverables is out of scope. If you want it, I will send a short change order with the price and the timeline impact. Work on it starts once you approve.

Timeline

  • Week 1: wireframes and homepage design
  • Week 2: remaining pages
  • Week 3: build and QA
  • Week 4: launch

Dates assume feedback within 2 working days. Late feedback moves the dates by the same amount.

Payment

50% upfront, 50% before launch. Extra work is billed as approved change orders.

The scope creep every web designer hears

"Can we add a blog? Should be quick."

Why it is not free: A blog is a CMS setup, a listing page, a post template and usually a category system. That is a mini project.

How to price it: Fixed price per template, or 6 to 10 hours at your rate.

"Can you make it look more like this other site?" after design is approved

Why it is not free: That is a redesign, not a revision. Your revision rounds were for the approved direction.

How to price it: New design round, priced per page.

"Can you write the copy too? You know what we do."

Why it is not free: Copywriting is a separate skill and a separate line item. It also blocks your design timeline.

How to price it: Per page copy fee, plus timeline moves by a week.

Turn the next ask into a change order

Here is one already filled in for a typical web designer job: add a blog: listing page, post template, cms setup with categories, 8 hours at $60/hour. Change the numbers to yours and send it.

Questions

What should a web designer scope of work include?

The exact deliverables, how many revision rounds and what counts as a round, a clear out of scope list, the timeline, and payment terms. The out of scope list does most of the work when the client asks for extras.

How do web designers handle scope creep without losing the client?

Point back to the approved scope, then send a short change order with the price and the new date. Start the extra work only after the client approves it. Most clients are fine with it when it is written down from day one.

Is this template free to use?

Yes. Copy it, edit it, send it. No signup. It is not legal advice, so for big contracts have a lawyer look at your terms.
