UX Designer scope of work template

UX projects creep through "flows". One new flow means 6 screens, 3 states each, plus the empty state nobody thought about. Scope by flows and screens, and say what research is included.

  • UX and UI for [3] flows: onboarding, main dashboard, settings
  • Up to [20] screens, desktop and mobile

  • User interviews or usability testing
  • New flows beyond the 3 listed
  • Full design system
  • Marketing website or illustrations
  • Building the front end

Anything not listed under Deliverables is out of scope. If you want it, I will send a short change order with the price and the timeline impact. Work on it starts once you approve.

Timeline

  • Week 1: flows and wireframes
  • Weeks 2 to 3: UI
  • Week 4: prototype and handover

Dates assume feedback within 2 working days. Late feedback moves the dates by the same amount.

The scope creep every UX designer hears

"Can you add a flow for team invites?"

Why it is not free: New flow, new screens, new states.

How to price it: Per flow fixed price.

"Can you test it with a few users?"

Why it is not free: Research needs recruiting, scripts and synthesis.

How to price it: Research package.

"Can you design the landing page too?"

Why it is not free: Marketing design is a separate project.

How to price it: Fixed price per page.

Turn the next ask into a change order

Here is one already filled in for a typical UX designer job: add a team invite flow: invite, accept, roles, empty states, 12 hours at $65/hour. Change the numbers to yours and send it.

Questions

What should a UX designer scope of work include?

The exact deliverables, how many revision rounds and what counts as a round, a clear out of scope list, the timeline, and payment terms. The out of scope list does most of the work when the client asks for extras.

How do UX designers handle scope creep without losing the client?

Point back to the approved scope, then send a short change order with the price and the new date. Start the extra work only after the client approves it. Most clients are fine with it when it is written down from day one.

Is this template free to use?

Yes. Copy it, edit it, send it. No signup. It is not legal advice, so for big contracts have a lawyer look at your terms.
